Works by:
Iannis Xenakis, Metastasis (1953-1954)
Theodore Antoniou, Kommos II ( lament for Morton) (1996)

Twenty years on, the ensemble founded by Manos Hadzidakis has to its credit over 200 performances of works by Greek composers. The Orchestra of Colours will be appearing at this year’s Athens Festival with a demanding and varied programme which spans three generations of Greek creativity in the field of classical music. Legendary early works by two giants of the international avant-garde—Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) and Jani Christou (1926-1970)—are counterbalanced by more recent works by Theodore Antoniou (b.1935), Georges Kouroupos (b.1942) and Georges Koumendakis (b.1959), whose Amor Fati was composed for Kazantzakis Year (2007).

“A ballad of the unemployed driver Kasimir and of his bride… a ballad full of silent sadness, softened by humour; or, at any rate, by the banal insight that ‘we all have to die one day’”. This is how Horváth describes Kasimir and Karoline, the play he wrote in 1932 in the midst of Germany’s political and economic crisis.

Athens State Orchestra conducted by Byron Fidetzis
Soloist:
Xavier Phillips, cello
Works by:
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, overture in D major, opus 27.
Henri Dutilleux, Tout un monde lointain, concerto for cello and orchestra.
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Die Erste Walpurgisnacht (The first Valpurgis night), cantata for soloist, choir and orchestra, opus 60.
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy tribute.
The Athens State Orchestra is celebrating the second centennial of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) with a major tribute to the composer who wrote symphonies, concertos, works for piano solo, chamber music and large-scale ecclesiastical pieces with the same facility. Having distinguished himself as a performer and composer at an early age—indeed, many call him the Mozart of the 19th century—he went on to spearhead the revival of Bach's music and to found an unconventional conservatory in his home town, Leipzig, which continues to produce exceptional musicians to this day.
Tickets: Prime circle: 60 €, zone A: 50 €, zone B: 40 €, zone C: 30 €, upper tier: 20 €
