During
the Greek War of
Independence, the Ottomans ran out of ammunition. They started
destroying many architectural features so that they could remove
the lead which joined the marble together. On seeing this, the
rebel leader Gouras and the rest of the besieging Greeks sent
war material to the Ottomans so that they could continue fighting
without destroying the monument.
