The
metopes on the south side, 32 in total, depicted the Centauromachy
(war with the Centaurs). Ravages of time, religious fervor and
the looting by Lord Elgin,
caused great damage to the Parthenon,
the house of the Parthenos (virgin) Athena, one of the most
splendid buildings on the Acropolis
of Athens.
