Agia Fotini (Saint
Photini)
The
church of Saint Fotini Samaritissa is located at the beginning
of Kallirois street, near the Olympeion, on the place where the
banks of the river Ilissos used to be. It is dedicated to Fotini
of Samarela, a prostitute who gave Christ a cup of water. Today
the church is particularly popular because of various ceremonies
as it is surrounded by a park.
It
was built in 1872 on the location where, during the 1830s, the
Bavarian soldier’s cemetery was. It has had its present
form since its renovation in 1986. It is believed that the church
was built on the remains of an ancient monument dedicated to Hekate.
Close to the church, one can still see the remains of another
ancient monument dedicated to Pan.
