Agii Pantes (All
Saints)
The
small Byzantine church of All Saints is situated on Kiriakou street
near the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium in Ambelokipi. The church
has been in its present form since the renovation and restoration
of 1956.
There
is no information regarding to the church’s foundation or
history. It can, however, be dated to the 11th century on the
basis of its architectural form. The fact that the church is found
in a suburb of the medieval city of Athens, as well as certain
archaeological finds (during excavation in the area several buildings
related to the church were found), indicate that the church used
to be the main church of a Byzantine monastery.
The
building is of the four-columned cross-in-square type with an
eight-sided dome. The façades are modeled according to
the Athenian churches of this era. The masonry follows the cloisonné
style and there is plain decoration only on the windows and openings.
The numerous ancient architectural elements incorporated into
the walls, many of which have inscriptions, are particularly interesting.
Today the church is the parish of the Petraki Monastery.
