The small post-Byzantine Church of Saint Athanassios Kourkouris
is situated on the pedestrianized Eptachalkou street in Thissio. It
is named after its donor, Kourkouris. The church was built on
the site of an ancient monument dedicated to the Attic hero Chalkodon.
The
original building was a vaulted basilica with weight-bearing arches
on its longer side. Today, this original structure forms the sanctuary
of a church that was built later. On the northern side there used
to be a smaller chapel.
The
church of Saint Athanassios Athonitis, built in 1756, is on the
eastern side of the small church. Its bell tower and marble propylon
(monumental entrance) are impressive.
