Agios Dionysios Areopagitis (Saint
Dionysios)
Catholic Church
The catholic church of Athens, dedicated to Saint Dionysios Areopagitis,
is on the corner of Eleftheriou Venizelou (Panepistimiou) and
Omirou streets. It was designed by Leo von Klenze in 1844. Due
to the lack of funding, the design was altered and simplified
by Lissandros Kaftantzoglou.
The
construction of the church, which is a three-aisled basilica, began in 1853 and was completed in 1865. Impressive marble steps
lead up to the church while the Renaissance-style porch, designed
by Kaftantzoglou, also is interesting. The porch has three entrances
to the three aisles of the church. The four story bell tower is
a little higher than the church’s roof. All work on the
building was completed in 1887 with a collection among the catholic
community of the island of Syros.
