Churches in Athens
Agios Georgios Karitsis (Saint
George Karitsis)
You’ll find the church of Saint George Karitsis at the junction
of Parnassou and Christou Lada streets, very close to the Museum
of the City of Athens. The church as we can see it today, is a
three-aisled, domed basilica that was built on the location of
an older Byzantine church that belonged to the Karykes Family,
hence the name “Karitsis”.
In
1845, Efrosini Negri, Ioannis Filimon, the Leonardou family and
local parishioners, decided to fund the demolition of the older
church and the construction of a new one. Useful and important
architectural material from the old building were incorporated
into the new on, for example the columns and several elements.
Lissandros Kaftantzoglou, the church’s architect, maintained
the Byzantine style as requested by the donors. The new church
was completed in 1849.
