Agios Georgios Rizareios
(Saint George Rirzareios)

Immediately next to the Evangelismos metro station,on Vasillissis Sofias avenue, is the Church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) Rizareios. According to a marble inscription on the façade of the building, the church was built in 1843 in neoclassical style by the architect Armodios Vlachos.

The church was funded by Georgios Rizaris, a merchant and national benefactor of Greece, who established the Rizareios Ecclesiastical School. Today, the school is in Halandri, outside the municipality of Athens. The old building on Vassillissis Sofias avenue no longer exists.

The statue of the founders is in the entrance to the church. In the rear courtyard is a large bell given by the Romanian artist Stefan Ramniceanu and put in place there in 1992.
