Churches in Athens
Agios Georgios tou Vrachou (Saint
George Saint George on the Cliff)
If your walk takes you to Statonos street, on the north-eastern
foot of the Acropolis, look out for the small church of Saint
George on the cliffs. This church was built in the 17th century
and renovated during the mid-19th century, following the development
of the Anafiotika area.
It
is a single-naved barrel-vaulted church with blind arches on the
longer sides which was a popular architectural type during the
Ottoman period in Athens (as in the churches of Saint Symeon,
Holy Power, Saint Athanasios Kourkouris and Saint Demetrius Loubardiaris).
The
name of the church comes from its location at the foot of the
Acropolis rock. A few meters from the garden on the eastern side
you can see a memorial stone dedicated to Konstantinos Koukidis,
an Acropolis guard who, according to tradition, wrapped himself
in the Greek flag and threw himself off the Acropolis when the
Germans invaded Athens on 27 April 1941.
