Churches in Athens
Agios Filippos (Saint
Philip)
The church of Saint Philip is situated on Adrianou street, opposite
the entrance to the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora (market).
The church was built in 1866 on the remains of an older one which,
according to written sources of 1821, was already in ruins. The
writing and drawings of various travelers give much information
about the original church. It was a three-aisled timber-roofed
basilica of which the earliest construction probably dated back
to the 17the century.
On
the façade there was a conch enclosing a wall painting
of Saint Philip. It is believed that Saint Philip spoke here to
the gathered Athenians. There are indications that on this spot
there was once another early Christian church underneath the existing
building. The area around the church is known as “Giousouroum”,
a gathering place for numerous tradesmen.
