The torpedo boat "Thyella", oil painting by B. Hadjis - Hellenic Maritime Museum, Piraeus

Hellenic Maritime Museum

In 1867, Captain G. Zohios suggested to collect and maintain all objects related to the Greek naval history and to lay the foundation for the creation of a Naval Museum. Almost 80 years passed until the foundation in 1949. The Hellenic Maritime Museum comprises nine rooms where the nautical history of Greece, from prehistoric times to present day, is shown.

Among the 2.000 chronologically ordered exhibits, from 8.000 BC till today, there are models of ancient and modern ships, paintings by some of the greatest 19th and 20th century Greek painters of seascapes (Prossalendis, Volanakis, Hadjis, etc.), guns, maps, flags, medals, nautical instruments, etc.

The museum has a specialized library with over 10.000 books and rich archival material, approximately 200 maps (16th-20th century), as well as a photographic and film collection which includes the archives of Admiral Kriezis.
