Cinemas in Athens

Athenians love the cinema. It’s a passion that never grows cold and Athens can indulge everyone’s particular taste both in films and in theatres. Love seats in a multiplex, popcorn and jasmine in a summer cinema and style in the city’s most aristocratic downtown theatre. Today’s Athenian is a filmgoer, winter and summer.

Outdoor cinemas are one of the most entertaining ways to kick off your summer evening in Athens. The movies are not dubbed and the Greek translation appears in subtitles. You can purchase your tickets for 15-20 minutes ahead of the performance thus avoiding long queues. Usually there are two programs, one at 9 p.m., the other at 11 p.m. Seats are not numbered and you can sit wherever you choose. Lots of open-air cinemas have a garden with tables where you can have a snack and a drink while enjoying the movie.

Village Center Maroussi

The Village Center in Maroussi opened a few years ago and was the first multiplex cinema to open in Greece. It instantly became a popular hangout with the young.

The complex's ten cinemas come with comfortable chairs covered in red velvet and a state-of-the-art dolby surround sound system. In addition to watching the latest movies, one can also visit the shops, cafeterias and video games arcade that form part of the complex. Ample parking space is provided in the basement.

Village Park Entertainment Center

The year 2000 saw the opening of Europe's largest entertainment complex spread out over 42.000 square metres. It consists of 20 cinemas, 45 shops and several dining venues including a Planet Hollywood restaurant. The garden hosts a laser show and water fountains.

The complex developers were determined to create the world's best screening rooms with large wall-to-wall screens, a top-of-the-range THX sound system developed by Lucasfilms, love seats and stadium seating for an unobtrusive view. The cinemas also offer wheelchair access. Telephone reservation is recommended for ensuring a good seat.

The best thing about going to the cinema in Greece is that all movies, except Greek-language ones, are featured in the original language with Greek subtitles.
