Weather
in Athens
The
weather in Athens is much more predictable than your local
taxman is. However, days with +20° and over in January
or February are not uncommon.
If
you plan on visiting Athens between June and October, make sure
you book an hotel with air-conditioning. The morning and evening
temperature usually is excellent but during the day, Athens can
be very warm. All night long you can enjoy Greek food and drinks
sitting in a T-shirt on some nice terrace in Plaka, Monastiraki,
Psirri or Anafiotika. It stays warm in Athens till the end of
November and winter mostly is pretty mild. Autumn and spring can
be chilly and wet but you won’t need much more than an umbrella,
a windbreaker and warm sweater. Athens has about 55 days of rain
per year totalling 404,4 mm.
Snow in Athens? Yes, it can happen but not much more than once
or twice in a winter season and the snow doesn't stay long so
don’t bring your skis. January 2000 was the famous exception
to the rule. It snowed for three days and people in town are still
taking about it now.
Here’s how the weather in Athens
is at this moment:
When
to visit Athens?
All depends on what you expect of your Athens visit.
If you want to avoid tourist crowds, get good deals on hotel rooms
and you own an umbrella, then December till the end of March is
your time of the year. You have to keep in mind though that some
restaurants, tavernas or places you want to visit may be closed.
October-November and April-June is the time that the weather is
still or already warm and the majority of the tourists are still
working hard at home. On top, all or most young Athenians will
be in school during the day so you won’t have to fight your
way through the crowds. There is some nightlife but not as much
as during summer. However, you won’t have to look nor wait
for a free table to eat.
What about summer? July, August and September are the busiest
months in Athens. Most people are enjoying their annual vacation
during these months so you can expect the center of Athens to
be pretty crowded. Hotels and other accommodations are more expensive
as will be most of everything in Athens, especially in the tourist
areas. Nightlife however is so much more fun in summer when people
from all over the world enjoy the evenings and sometimes most
of the night on terraces all over the center. This is the time
that Athens really is alive. You will hear Greeks singing on many
terraces and you will soon be dancing the sirtaki, maybe even
on top of the terrace tables depending on the quality and quantity
of the ouzo you had..... and the strength of the table.
