Churches in Athens
Panagia Romvi (Virgin
Mary of Romvi)
There are no written sources giving details on this church that
you will see between the Evangelistrias and Ermou streets. The
name Romvis, or Roumbis, refers to the church’s founder
and there are numerous legal documents from the Ottoman period
in which an Athenian family of that name is mentioned.
The
church is a three-aisled basilica that was probably built in the
beginning of the Ottoman era. Its external walls were altered
as a result of repairs in more recent years. The aisles are covered
by vaults, the central one ending in conches. There is an additional
building on the northern side of the church in two long compartments
of which the northern one is used as a chapel.
