The Centre for the Study of Traditional pottery in Athens

Museum of Traditional Pottery
Centre for the Study of Traditional pottery

The Centre of the Study of Traditional Pottery, also known as the Museum of Traditional Pottery, is situated on 4-6 Melidoni Street in Kerameikos. The museum owes much to the inspirational work of Betty Psaropoulou. Over many years, she acquired a large collection of traditional ceramics and researched the various types, methods of production and materials.

She founded the centre in 1987 in her house on Ipitou Street in Plaka. Teams of younger researchers continued her work in different locations, gathering additional material and publishing a number of books on the subject.

Museum of Traditional PotteryIn 2000 the museum was transferred to its present location, a neoclassical building with a central yard paved with slabs which was provided by the Ministry of Culture. Visitors to the museum can explore the different stages of pottery-making in a specially set-up atelier with explanatory audio-visual displays.

The museum has a total of 4.500 ceramics. Those items not on display are kept in the centre’s original building. There also are temporary exhibitions, educational activities, events and research programs.
