City
buses and trolleys
With 92% of its vehicles recently built, Athens can be proud to
have one of the most modern bus networks in Europe. The city also
holds the European record for environmentally busses. In Athens,
416 busses run on natural gas. Because of their “bubbles”
exterior, they are easy recognizable.
A
ticket for all busses and trolleys costs 0.50 Euro for a single
journey. They can be bought in all metro stations and at about
3.500 news stands. They are sold individually or in bundles of
10 and must be validated by a machine on the bus.
City
buses travel the streets and avenues taking you just about everywhere
you want to go. This is a very inexpensive way of traveling. Seaside
Attika buses go from the Akademia bus station while Kifisia and
north suburbs buses go from Kaningos Square.
Athens
has over 300 intelligent bus stops equipped with screens and audio
announcements to inform users about buses and timetables. The
buses can also communicate with the traffic lights to quicken
the journey. Using gps, they can signal their position to the
control centre and inform them of the number of passengers they
are carrying. This allows the control centre to increase the number
of bus runs if necessary.
Long distance buses:
The long distance buses are another common form of transport used
in Greece. Being a mountainous country, Greece relies greatly
on buses for transportation. Most cities have more than one bus
per day even on long runs where the trip takes 5 hours or more.
You can find the schedules of the most common Greek long distance
busses on our long
distance bus timetables page.
Buses
in Athens are available daily from 05:00 to 24:00
