Churches in Athens
Agii Anargyri (Saints
Anargyri)
The
church of Saints Anargyri is in the middle of the square with
the same name in Psirri. It was built over an older Byzantine
church which was destroyed in 1827 by the Ottoman army that besieged
the Acropolis.
The
church has been in its present state since its rebuilding in 1832
and the repairs of 1908. The building has strong Byzantine influences,
is of the cross-in-square type and has two bell towers on its
western site. Apart from the architectural style, the Byzantine
influences are evident in the exterior decorations with the characteristic
dentils.
