THE SARONIC ISLANDS
The islands of the Saronic and Argolic Gulf, the Argosaronic
Gulf islands, are located between the northeast shores of
the Peloponnese and the west coast of Attica. They all attract
a considerable number of visitors, especially at weekends
(mainly from Athens) and during the summer months.
The main inhabited islands are Salamis Island (where the ancient Greek navy defeated the Persians in the Battle of Salamis), Aegina, Angistri, and Poros. The islands of Hydra and Dokos, which lie off the northeast tip of the Peloponnese, are often included as part of the Saronic Islands.
The
main features of these islands are their pretty villages, delightful
beaches, typical white houses and narrow cobbled streets, yet
each has its own unique personality. Their past is rich in
mythological and historical tradition intimately associated
with the sea. The
mild climate, high standard of tourist infrastructure and ease
of access make the isles an ideal place for holidays all year
round.
